WELCOME TO THE MONOWA FOUNDATION
A new way to protect biodiversity
The MONOWA Foundation was created to protect biodiversity through butterfly conservation, scientific research, and environmental education.
We work to protect endangered species, conserve habitats of high ecological value and bring nature closer to society through projects with real impact.
"We never protect what we do not know; we only truly defend what we have learned to love."
Why butterflies?
Butterflies are much more than a symbol of beauty. They are health indicators of our ecosystems.
Protecting them also means protect habitats and species that depend on them.
Our areas of action
Conservation of tropical ecosystems
See moreConservation of tropical ecosystems
Our goal is to contribute to the protection of tropical ecosystems of high ecological value, developing conservation, research and international cooperation projects, with special attention to the Andean Chocó of Ecuador and São Tomé and Príncipe.
Lepidoptera Conservation in Spain
See moreLepidoptera Conservation in Spain
We want to contribute to the protection and knowledge of butterflies and their habitats in Spain, promoting scientific monitoring programs, conservation of threatened species and applied research, such as the Violetae Plan and the Monarch Plan.
Scientific heritage, training and transmission
See moreScientific heritage, training and transmission
We aspire to preserve and transmit entomological heritage, highlighting scientific collections such as the Alcide d'Orbigny Collection and other historical works, along with the development of training, education and outreach programs that connect the history of entomology with new generations.
Andean Chocó – Ecuador
Our aim is to contribute to the protection of approximately 50 hectares of tropical forest in Choco Andino of Pichincha, one of the regions with the greatest biodiversity on the planet.
The project envisions the creation of a Lepidoptera Research Station, intended for the study of butterflies and other polarizers, the monitoring of biodiversity, and the development of scientific programs.
Saint Tomé and Príncipe – Gulf of Guinea
We aspire to develop a research platform and conservation of tropical biodiversity, a territory characterized by its high level of endemism and ecological uniqueness.
The goal is to promote inventories and scientific studies on lepidoptera and other biological groups, establish biodiversity monitoring programs and to promote collaboration between international researchers and local institutions.
Violetae Plan–Andalusia
Our aim is to contribute to the conservation of the Betic brown hairy hawk (Agrodiaetus violetae), an endemic butterfly of Andalusia, listed as vulnerable.
The program proposes to establish a scientific monitoring system for their populations, study their distribution and evolution, identify the main threats and promote measures for the protection and improvement of their habitats. It also envisions collaboration with universities, government agencies, and scientific institutions to generate knowledge that can contribute to their long-term conservation.
MONARCH PLAN - Benalmádena
The Monarch Plan aims to develop a scientific monitoring program for monarch butterfly populations (danaus plexippus) present on the Costa del Sol, taking Benalmádena as a reference territory.
The project proposes to study the distribution, dynamics and evolution of its populationsas well as identifying and mapping its main host plants and breeding areas. Based on this knowledge, the aim is to promote the conservation and improvement of habitats associated with the species and generate useful information for long-term monitoring
